Whoopie Pies – The Next Big Thing in Baking

Whoopie Pies have been getting a lot of coverage in the national press and on the internet recently so here at Ice Maiden Cakes we decided that it was time to introduce these little delights to the West Country.

Freqently described as ‘an inside out cupcake’ Whoopie Pies consist of two round mounds of cake sandwiched around a filling of sweet buttercream. They have a slightly crisp outside and a soft cakey inside and the classic recipes involve chocolate cake and vanilla filling like these ones we tried out in the Ice Maiden kitchen.

They originate from the Amish communities of New England and were made with left over cake batter by Amish wives for their husbands lunch boxes. The legend goes that when the farmers opened up their lunch they would discover the little cakes and shout ‘whoopie’, hence the name Whoopie Pies. Traditionally they would be served plain but bakers across the country are getting artistic with their toppings and elevating these simple treats into little works of art, as we have already done with the humble cupcakes.

The first batch to come out of our kitchen went down very well at Mr Ice Maiden’s office so we will be trying out more new flavours over the coming weeks.
